When I went to massage school, I met a beautiful lady there with shiny golden brown hair. Her hair had the most beautiful silky texture to it. One day as we were all sitting in a group talking about healthy remedies, she spoke up and said that she had not used shampoo in years! First I thought, “GROSS! How could she do that!” but then I observed her hair and saw it looked radiant! I boldly asked to smell her hair and it smelt like lavender. She continued on to say she washes it with apple cider vinegar and then sometimes puts a tiny drop of lavender in it. Years later, I was in the shower staring at the blob of shampoo I had squirted onto my hand. It was shiny bright blue with sparkles in it and it smelt like heaven.. But then I thought nothing natural looks like the skin of an avatar! As I got out of the shower, I started to research what ingredients are put inside shampoos. As much as it was easier to live in ignorance, something inside of me was urging me to look. AYAYA! So many unnecessary chemicals! Sodium Laurel Sulfate and similar compounds. Polyethelyne Glycol. Parabens. Formaldehyde. Dimethicone. Synthetic Coloring. And so much more. In fact after reading all the ingredients, nothing looked natural in there except small dose of fruit extract. So I decided to take the advice I was given many years ago at massage school – go natural! I tried a table spoon of baking soda, mixed it with hot water, stirred it all together and tried it on my hair. Rubbed it on my scalp the way I usually would and washed my hair with it. After rinsing it off, I put a table spoon of honey, 2 table spoons of coconut oil and hot water in a cup. I massaged my scalp, roots, the tips and everything in between. And rinsed it off after 5 minutes. The result was lovely! My head felt fresh, alive and clean without any chemicals. My hair was so soft and smooth. My scalp felt so happy. It really did the job and had a lovely gentle coconut smell to it. I dare you to try it once for yourself! You can also add a few drops of essential oils for a different smell depending on your mood. Sometimes I add a little bit of rose after I have dried my hair. Katie
